Swedish Rail Insulator Supply: A Journey of Innovation, Partnership, and Resilience

Since the award of the 2017 framework tender by Trafikverket (TRV), the Swedish Rail Authority, Mosdorfer’s collaboration to supply composite insulators for Sweden’s rail infrastructure has seen remarkable growth and success. Mosdorfer Rail, with their long-term and trusted local railway partner SAB Elteknik AB developed a strategic partnership which evolved from initial research & development and testing to a long-term framework contract with TRV. Mosdorfer Rail now supply 100% of the supply.

The journey began in mid-2017 with the award of the Trafikverket (TRV) contract for the supply of 15kV composite insulators to Mosdorfer Rail, via SAB Elteknik AB. This required the development of five insulator types tailored specifically to TRV’s requirements. After extensive design and type testing, the project reached a key milestone by mid-2018, with all products meeting the rigorous quality and technical IEC standards

In the period 2018 to 2021 Mosdorfer Rail supplied 50% of TRV’s insulator requirement totalling 30 000  pieces by the end of 2021.

In 2022, Mosdorfer Rail secured 100% of the supply of composite insulators under a new framework contract awarded to their partner SAB Elteknik AB, ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality insulators to TRV. In this period, a further 50  000 insulator were supplied.

The current framework has been extended till end 2027 with forecasted demand expected to result in an additional supply of 30 000 insulators in this time.

As part of the continued commitment to improving system resilience, a new F-neck type insulator was developed to address specific needs in the Swedish Rail network. After successful trials testing installations, 1,600 units were supplied for first installations.

 A further 1620 pieces are planned for January 2026 installations.

The installation process for these insulators was carefully monitored, with several key installations showcased, including those by LMV Kontaktledning AB.

The partnership between Mosdorfer Rail, SAB Elteknik AB and Trafikverket is a testament to the success of collaboration in the railway sector, where technological innovation, rigorous testing, and a shared commitment to quality have all played a part in strengthening the resilience of Sweden’s Rail infrastructure.

As the framework contract moves forward through 2026 and beyond, Mosdorfer Rail is committed to providing high-quality composite insulators and ensuring the continued success of Sweden’s rail system for years to come.
